Flash drives are a replacement for using hard drives. they are more compact and convenient. Flash memory can be used for electronics such as cameras and video games and mp3 players. Flash memory is solid state so there are no moving parts, unlike a hard drive.

A flash drive is an EEPROM chip "It has a grid of columns and rows with a cell that has two transistors at each intersection The two transistors are separated from each other by a thin oxide layer. One of the transistors is known as a floating gate, and the other one is the control gate. The floating gate's only link to the row, or wordline, is through the control gate" (http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/flash-memory.htm)

Flash drives are made in many different forms. there are memory cards, sd cards, and different usb drives. they are smaller and more durable than external hard drives with moving parts. they're also small enough to carry around in your pocket. They are also better than floppy disk storage because many computers come without floppy disk drives and USB is universal. Some are extremely small, about the size of your finger tip (micro SD), and also some larger ones such as this 32 gb flash memory.

Trek was the first company to patent a USB flash drive in 2000 but there is a lot of dispute as to who really created the flash drive. Other companies include SanDisk, and IBM all of which were early inovators of flash memory.

Flash Drives are easy to find, available at most stores that sell computer accessories, also on many online stores. They are cheap and convenient to carry your files on. Also they don't have many problems because they don't have moving parts so there isn't much you would have to fix if you had trouble with it.
